A Modeler's Legacy

Written by Lisa Headley-Rist Letter to the editor As seen in the April 2017 issue of Model Aviation.

Thanks for reprinting Jack “JW” Headley’s “Sportswagon Jr.” article in your December [2016] issue [in “Plans Service Showcase”]. It brought back many happy memories of my Dad. I thought your readers would enjoy knowing that JW’s grandkids are carrying on the flying tradition. They are also starting to build their own airplanes using foam board and Flite Test plans. Your readers can catch up on all things JW Headley by checking out the RCGroups blog thread under Doug Starwalt’s blog. We are also collaborating on a biography of my dad to send to the museum [National Model Aviation Museum]. My Dad loved flying RC models and it was fun to see him being remembered. Cheers! —Lisa Headley-Rist Visit AMA Plans Service to order plans.

My dad gave me my favorite airplane as a fifth grader, a 10 year old, 1959 Ramblin' Wreck. This year, I was stunned to find the 1200 dpi plans on line in a haphazard Google search. After enlarging and taping the 12 sheets of paper together, blew the $80 at Balsawoodinc, and traveled and back to my cherished childhood, trying to recreate the days with dad. I mixed in the best of today's materials, radio, (no galloping ghost), power plant, and GoPro camera. That bird is ever present in the passenger seat for when the moment is right! I feel him standing with me sometimes on the field. (The movies are spectacular too!)
