May 2025 - District XI

This month, I want to discuss RC Scale competition. It is one of my favorite things to do and has been for the past 10 years. We have a good size following here in the Pacific Northwest, and there are several opportunities for you to see or compete in one of the five Scale events scheduled for this season. The website that will give you the rules, events schedule, and other information about our area’s events is www.nwscale.org.

It is easy to get started. You don’t need to spend hundreds of hours building a model (although that is fun too). You can fly almost anything as a beginner. We want it to look like a full-scale aircraft, but we allow a lot of leeway.

It is best to have something with which you are comfortable flying—something that does what you want it to. I started with a Great Planes Piper Cub, but we have had pilots use ARF Timbers. The group is happy to help anyone who shows interest. We think the more the merrier. Give me a holler if you need any advice. I’m always happy to chat about Scale flying.

Last September,we had the NorthWest Scale Aero-Modellers event in East Wenatchee, Washington, at the Red Apple Flyers field. This was the 15th annual gathering and it had 35 entries throughout six classes. The largest class was Pro-Am Sportsman, our beginner class, with 14 entries. We flew five rounds, had good weather, and everyone had a great time. Here are some photos:

This year, we are holding the event in Othello, Washington, at Weaver’s Field, on September 12-14. It will be another great event. Be sure to put it on your calendar.

That’s all for this month. Keep building and flying!
