May 2025 - District X

I had an opportunity to visit Speedworld R.C. Flyers in Whittman, Arizona, for the Phoenix Quarter 40 (Q-40) Classic Pylon Racing event. This premier competition brought together the best in RC Pylon Racing in a fast-paced event that tested the skill, precision, and focus of each pilot and their caller as they raced in this Q-40 class, a division where speeds can reach up to 200 mph.

Club President Bill Blake was the contest director and Gerald Meux orchestrated the fast-paced race heats, masterfully keeping them on track. There was tremendous volunteer support for the event, including the pit area, pylon workers watching for cuts, scoring, and, of course, great food for everyone.

This Pylon Racing class is a high-intensity competition where pilots fly their airplanes around a triangular course marked by three pylons. The goal is to complete the course in the shortest time possible while maintaining precision and control. The Q-40 class is defined by its high-performance, composite aircraft that are powered by performance engines with tuned pipes, enabling the models to reach their peak speeds.

These aircraft are designed for speed and stability, allowing pilots to navigate tight turns and intense straightaways with the utmost precision. The races are fast and demanding. Pilots need to demonstrate perfect timing, quick reflexes, and deep confidence in their aircraft’s capabilities.

Although most events draw from surrounding clubs and nearby states, these highly competitive racing events draw from an even broader area. This event had roughly 70 pilots competing from neighboring states and from seven countries.

The Speedworld R.C. Flyers provided an excellent facility, favorable conditions, and an ideal environment for RC Pylon Racing. The site supports the speed and intensity of Q-40, with wide open spaces that allow for fast-paced action and safe, challenging racing. The Phoenix Q-40 Classic continues to be a defining event for Pylon Racing, pushing the limits of both pilot skill and aircraft performance.

Enjoy everythingyou build and fly.
