May 2025 - District I

This event report was provided by Associate Vice President Andrew Figlar, who attended the Quaker Farms RC Flyers (QFRCF) Cub Scout event. The purpose of the event was to introduce the youngsters to the joys of RC flying, aeromodeling, the club, and AMA.

John DeMeyer, president of QFRCF in Oxford, Connecticut, invited Cubmaster Keith Hornberger to the club’s pristine field, located in a watershed valley in New Haven County. More than 30 Scouts and parents attended.

Among all of the AMA events I attend, I always find joy in photographing and writing about the happy kids at club flying sites. The Scouts had a ball eagerly watching RC pilots display their flying skills with various model aircraft. Their excitement and smiles were unmatched when they got the chance to fly using flight simulators and buddy-box transmitters while being guided by the club’s flight instructors.

Mike Maillet flew his Tron 7.0 Dnamic helicopter. This fast-moving, aerobatic heli was a crowdpleaser. John Ganter put on quite a show with his Bushmaster Legacy airplane, and John buddy-boxed Nathan and Natalie Bouchard.

Thanks to Keith, John, and all of those who participated in supporting this STEM fun-fly for the Scouts.

Special thanks to Andrew for submitting his 20th District I column report! Events such as this not only ignite an interest in the hobby but often lead to increased youth participation in STEM-related education.
