Peter Goldsmith: I Am The AMA Two-Time Winner of Mr. Top Gun
By Jay Smith | [email protected]
As seen in the September 2022 issue of Model Aviation.
JAY SMITH: How did you become involved with model aviation?
PETER GOLDSMITH: My dad and I built a small rubber model when I was 4 years old. I have been hooked ever since. I’ve always been fascinated with flight. That’s just the way God made me. My dad took me to the local flying club every Saturday. I didn’t have a model; I just stood at the fence for hours and watched.
JS: How has model aviation impacted your life and/or career?
PG: It’s been fantastic! Everything good in my life has come from this hobby— friends, family, work, etc.—everything. It’s a really good, educational hobby.
JS: What disciplines of modeling do you currently participate in?
PG: Pretty much all of them. I’m not racing as much as I used to, but I do practically everything else.
JS: What other hobbies do you have?
PG: I like motor racing and, of course, the cars. I’m a car guy for sure. My friend and I built a Shelby Cobra two years ago, and the next project will be a Daytona Coupe. I love tinkering on cars, especially the engines.
JS: Who or what has influenced you the most?
PG: My dad. Most of my wisdom and character is because of my dad.
JS: What advice would you give to someone looking to compete at Top Gun?
PG: Go there in a teachable posture, have an open mind and open heart, learn all you can, talk to as many of the veterans as you can, and ask questions. Practice as much as time permits and, of course, get a copy of the rules and read them thoroughly …
