National Model Aviation Museum Heli Exhibit

Traditionally, the December issue of Model Aviation features helicopters. Inside the December 2011 issue, readers will find coverage of the IRCHA Jamboree, a plan-build for an AH-56, helicopter pilot human interest stories, and more.

To learn more about helicopters, we encourage you to visit the National Model Aviation Museum's helicopter exhibit. There you will find a variety of model helicopters dating back to the 1300s. In addition, enjoy an interactive kiosk display with videos from leading contemporary figures who drove helicopter innovation.



In 1796 Cayley redesigned the helicopter model, a popular children's toy throughout Europe. Cayley's helicopter was powered by a bow-and-string mechanism, and demonstrated airscrew propulsion.




The Super Susie Plus, designed by Gene Rock, was possibly the first published helicopter for the scratch builder, appearing in 1972.




The Du-Bros Whirlybird 505 was one of the first radio controlled helicopter kits available, retailing for $125 when it appeared on the market in 1972.




Horace Hagen donates his model of Dieter Schlueter's AH-1G Bell Huey Cobra to the museum. Hagen regularly demonstrated model helicopters like the AH-1G at aeromodeling events since the 1970s.
