National Model Aviation Day 2018

This year’s annual National Model Aviation Day celebration drew record crowds and hit a fundraising milestone. Clubs across the country were invited to participate in National Model Aviation Day, set for August 11. The organizations could hold their celebrations on that day or whenever best fit their schedules. One AMA club, the Blacksheep R/C Modelers, of Danville, Indiana, held an air show and fly-in August 11. The club raised more than $12,000 for the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation. According to Mandee Mikulski, AMA Foundation director of development, this is the most money a club has raised through a National Model Aviation Day event. Clubs that held National Model Aviation Day celebrations were asked to raise money for the AMA Foundation or for a charity of their choice.

The Blacksheep R/C Modelers Club, of Danville IN, raised more than $12,000 for charity during its National Model Aviation Day celebration.

The Blacksheep R/C Modelers sold more than 160 barbecue lunches and held a raffle to raise the money for the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation, which provides housing to homeless Indiana veterans. Activities included a noon air show, rockets, a candy drop, and special guests. Elsewhere in Indiana, at AMA Headquarters in Muncie, the annual Aviation Adventure Day set its new attendance record. During the August 4 event, 673 people toured the National Model Aviation Museum, compared with the previous record of 509 set in 2017. Also, 115 EAA Young Eagles flights were made thanks to volunteers from the EAA, which topped the number that took place at the 2017 celebration.
